SWIM coach Ryan Whiddett (16) pushed himself to the limit swimming 20km for charity as part of Kwinana Recquatic’s Virtual Rott-nest Channel Swim last Saturday.
The Kwinana Hornets Swimming Club member completed 500 laps of the 25m pool in less than eight hours of continuous swimming, making him the first person to complete the solo swim at the Recquatic. Whiddett said it was a real test of his physical and mental strength.
“I thought I’d be able to do it, but it was definitely harder than I expected,” he said.
A medic kept an eye on him throughout the gruelling swim, especially during the last few hundred metres that had the eager swimmer fighting to the finish.
Despite his weariness after the swim, Whiddett was back in the pool this week, where he trains four times a week and coaches junior swimmers.
The Kwinana Hornets also fielded two relay teams for the VRCS, with all funds raised going to the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
