Pair keen to repeat tortuous trek

DAVE and Terry Scott are back in town after successfully completing the Gibb River Road Mountain Bike Challenge.

A little worse for wear, the pair who live in Mullaloo and Hillarys respectively, joined about 250 other mountain bike riders in a torturous journey over 777km of the Kimberley’s toughest terrain.

Their six-member team, The Rawring Forties, raised $33,000 for WA Police Legacy and Royal Life Saving WA.

The challenge began in Derby and wound its way through the ranges and plains of the Kimberley, finishing at the El Questro township.

Rawring Forties completed the 777km in a time of 26 hours and 27 minutes, two hours ahead of its nearest rivals.

Terry said even though it technically was not a race, a mixture of testosterone, bikes and dirt meant it was “on for young and old”.

“The competitive streak comes out and team tactics play a major role, with riders flying through their transitions in relay format so the next rider is fresh and raring to go,” he said.”

Terry said the highlight of the trip, apart from having a coldie at the end of each day, was conquering the Kurungie Track – a 70km detour just past the crocodile-infested Pentecost River.

“The terrain was so rough on this final day’s stage that support vehicles could not keep up with riders, so for man it was a long day in the saddle but certainly rewarding at the end,” he said.

The team is keen to enter next year’s event and is hoping to raise even money for worthwhile organisations.

Anyone who wishes to sponsor the team can call Terry on 0418 938 005.
