A SOUTH Perth coffee shop owner says local prices should be more in line with eastern states standards.

Taste Coffee Shop recently launched $2.50 dine in or takeaway coffees and manager Frances Rawiri said there was general apathy to excessive prices in Perth.

“People seem to accept paying more than four dollars for a coffee but they don’t have to pay that in the eastern states and there is no reason they should have to pay it here.

“Because there is so much competition in Melbourne and Sydney, cafes must watch prices steady to remain competitive. Perth is growing and there are more options now, with cafes and alfresco spots emerging in the suburbs.”

Ms Rawiri said feedback to the lower prices was positive.

“Response has been positive and our coffees sell well.”

Presumably the business owner is covering the difference with increased turn over. Staff wages are the largest component of the cost in food service but it costs the same to employ a person by the hour whether she is making 10 coffees or 20. If I lived in the area I'd walk past another cafe with same quality to buy from this cafe and perhaps also buy a muffin to go with it. Good on them.

While I love a good coffee and I'll definitely pop in to check this place out, substantially undercutting everyone else as a business means you're either insane or cutting corners somewhere. I hope it's the former!

Well done . Coffee prices needed to be lowered. In some cases I noticed that the cup size varies and I still pay $3.80 -$4.00 I live in the northern suburbs so lets hope someone up here will lower the price but not the cup size.

yay...about time. Perth will soon be a place to live in and enjoy. $4 plus is absolutely ridiculous for a cup of coffee. In London you can get a double macchiato for 2.20 pounds pounds....that's four shots of coffee....in one hit...mmm yum

I own a cafe south of the river and while i agree that quite a few places in Perth over charge for average coffee, the standard price of a dine in coffee ($3.80) in perths southern suburbs is quite reasonable. We still dont make a big profit from coffee sales as staff wages in WA are huge and coffee beans are not cheap

About time! Well done can you give me your address so that I can pop in for a coffee.
Compared to Melbourne we pay far too much for Coffee some places even charge $4.50 - $5.00.
