What Comes Around

21/05/2008

A funny thing is happening to me as I age. I find myself becoming more compassionate towards other people.

Except the ones who don't use deodorant before boarding public transport, or waste electricity, or treat public areas like their own personal pigsties ...

May I start that sentence again?

A funny thing is happening to me as I age. I find myself.... more »

Mother's Day - Discuss

14/05/2008

How was Mother's Day this year for everyone?

My siblings and I were afraid to ask Mum what she wanted for Mother's Day, because she would have probably replied, "Grandchildren." So we took her (and the rest of the family) out for a nice meal instead.

I must say that I found the Mother's Day marketing frenzy quite frightening this year.

Diamonds! Spa days!.... more »

Pancake (Makeup) Tuesday

6/05/2008

And nothing goes better with pancakes than bananas.

(Yes, the link between title and content is tenuous but I am determined to make it work.)

Recently, a friend of mine went on YouTube for the first time to look for videos of her boss (she didn't say why and I didn't ask). A little while later, she came back and said she had no idea there was so much dumb stuff out there. more »

Are You Being Served?

6/05/2008

I'm sorry, I couldn't resist using that phrase for the title of this post. Mind you, I don't think anyone will understand the reference, but that's OK, reading it gives me a nice warm glow, and that is what counts.

A couple of weeks ago, I read with amusement that more »

This Strange and Foreign Precipitation

18/04/2008

Last night, as I blearily fell asleep listening to the rain, I briefly considered unplugging my laptop from the wall, in case of a power surge.

I then decided that three metres was much too far to walk and I would take my chances. Just think, a lightning strike might have fried my motherboard and this blog post would never have existed. The horror!

Whenever it gets a little.... more »

Paying for that Greener Grass

7/04/2008

There was a rather contentious opinion piece on news.com.au last week called [the] "Folly of Paid Maternity Leave". As you may guess, the author, Mirko Bagaric, was not a huge fan of paying mothers to leave work and have babies, and said that, "... paid maternity leave will result in an increase in the birth rate. But.... more »

Overheard on the Train

3/04/2008

"I'm going to hide the piss in my camera bag!"

Oho, are you, little man? I thought, surreptitiously pressing "Pause" on my MP3 player so I could hear better. (Hey, don't judge me. Some mornings, when you're trapped on public transport with weirdos staring and body odours creeping into your nasal cavities, breakfast radio and Pimsleur's Learn Mandarin Chinese just.... more »

Privacy Isn't Free

25/03/2008

So, a few nights ago, in an interesting lead-up to the long weekend, I received a nuisance phone call.

It was suitably pathetic, and I hung up as soon as I realised what it was, but it got me thinking about how a) having an unlisted phone number would be both awesome AND fantastic, and in fact, b) everyone should have a silent/unlisted number by default, and c) people should only have.... more »
