AFTER finishing her studies at Frederick Irwin Anglican School eight years ago, singer, songwriter and actor Emi Green has released a debut five-track CD online and is on the verge of signing a record deal in the UK.
A quick break at her parents’ Warnbro home, including a very lazy Australia Day, was a well-earned reward for the jet setter whose limited-edition CD will also earn funds for a charity supported by her partner, UK adventurer Dave Cornthwaite.
Just 500 CDs have been produced and Green (22) hopes to sign a record deal early this year as her London-based agent, armed with 20 of her original songs and three music videos, continues negotiations with several labels.
No stranger to hard work, Green moved to Sydney at 16 to study performing arts at the respected Brent Street studio before earning a lead role alongside Chaim Topol in Fiddler on the Roof during a three-year international tour.
She recently spent time as narrator in the UK production of Joseph and his Amazing Technicolour Dream Coat and has had cameos in Home and Away.
A trained pianist, Green realised her passion lay with songwriting and singing after teaching herself how to play the guitar 18 months ago.
“I’ve always written songs, but it was a personal thing,” she said. “Now it’s my way of being creative, vastly different to acting, where you portray a prescribed character. Directing musicians and making decisions about my own work while I recorded the CD has been very empowering.”
The CD includes Out Here, a song she wrote as a soundtrack to her partner’s documentary chronicling his 2500km kayak expedition along the Murray River.
Cornthwaite, holidaying in Warnbro with Green, also has two Guinness world records for skateboarding the length of Britain and the 5823km journey from Perth to Brisbane, raising funds for the AV Foundation to provide educational resources in developing countries.
But for now, it’s back to the fast-paced London lifestyle where Green juggles bar work, temping and dance and voice instruction while recording her music at night.
